Living with One or Fewer Biological Parents

What it means

Living with one or fewer biological parents may have unintended effects on a child's mental wellbeing.

Did you know?

The share of U.S. children living with a single parent has been rising for decades.

Almost a quarter of U.S. children under the age of 18 live with one parent and no other adults (23%).. This is more than three times the share of children around the world who do so (7%).

There are roughly 153 million orphans worldwide.

Every day, an estimated 5,700 more children become orphans. Children are often relinquished due to war, natural disaster, poverty, disease, stigma, and medical needs.
