Depression
Definition
There are four main types of depression, including:
- lasts for at a minimum 2 years, have major depressive episodes and periods of less severe symptoms
- extreme sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion after pregnancy or delivery make it difficult for new mother to care for themselves or the baby
- severe depression and a form psychosis including fake fixed belief aka delusions and hallucinations. The psychosis typically have depressive moods
- depression during the winter months, includes- social withdrawal, more sleep, and weight gain generally lifts when there is more natural sunlight in spring and summer
What are the symptoms of depression?
- Feeling restless or on-edge
- Persistent sadness or anxiousness
- Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness,
- Thoughts of death or suicide attempts
- Lack of concentration
- Difficulty controlling feelings of worry
- Various forms of sleep problems
- Loss of interest or pleasure, lack of energy, moving and/or talking more slowly

Depression treatment is often times successful
Up to 80% of those treated for depression show an improvement in their symptoms generally within four to six weeks of beginning medication, psychotherapy, attending support groups or a combination of these treatments.
1.9 million children, 3 – 17, have diagnosed depression.
Some children may not talk about their helpless and hopeless thoughts, and may not appear sad. Depression might also cause a child to make trouble or act unmotivated, causing others not to notice that the child is depressed, or to incorrectly label the child as a trouble-maker or lazy.
